Brazil's obesity rate has quadrupled since 1975 — from 7% to over 28% today. In a crowd of 2,000 Brazilians, roughly 562 are clinically obese. The transformation tracks a shift from a traditional diet of rice, beans, and vegetables to ultra-processed foods, heavily subsidized and aggressively marketed. Brazil now has both a hunger crisis and an obesity crisis running simultaneously, often in the same households.
