Egypt's internet penetration is around 73%, meaning roughly 540 of 2,000 Egyptians are completely offline. Egypt is the internet gateway for much of the Arab world: when protests erupted in 2011, the government shut down the country's entire internet for five days. It was the first time a nation-state had ever done that at scale.
