Egypt's official youth unemployment rate is around 20% — but the real picture is more complicated. A large portion of young Egyptians are "employed" in informal sector work: unregistered, unprotected, and paying a fraction of a formal wage. In a crowd of 2,000 young Egyptians, perhaps 400 have formal employment. The rest are navigating an economy that has never had enough formal sector capacity for its enormous youth population.
