Alcohol-related deaths in the US have nearly doubled since 1999. In 2022, over 178,000 Americans died from excessive alcohol use — more than opioids in many years. In a crowd of 2,000 American adults, roughly 130 drink at levels that meet the clinical definition of alcohol use disorder, though most have never been diagnosed.
