Germany's fertility rate of around 1.46 is below replacement, but it has held steadier than most of its European neighbors — partly because Germany has absorbed large numbers of immigrants with higher birth rates. In a crowd of 2,000 Germans, the demographic story is partly one of immigration: roughly 27% of residents have a migration background, and their children are reshaping Germany's generational math.
