The United States has one of the highest Gini coefficients among wealthy nations — a score that means more than 30% of total national income flows to the top 1%. In a crowd of 2,000 Americans, 20 people control the same wealth as the bottom 1,000 combined. The number has been climbing steadily since the 1970s.
