Japan's mental health system is among the most under-resourced in the developed world. The country has more psychiatric beds per capita than almost anywhere — yet community care barely exists. Most people with depression never receive a diagnosis. The 2020 pandemic reversed a decades-long decline in suicides, with a spike driven almost entirely by women.
