262 People Who Write Differently
In this crowd, 262 people are left-handed. That's about 1 in 8 — a stable number that has barely changed in recorded history. What has changed: they no longer get their left hand tied behind their backs in school. Progress, slowly, looks like this.

About 10-12% of Americans are left-handed — roughly 240 figures in a crowd of 2,000. The US has one of the world's highest reported left-handedness rates, partly because there was never a systematic educational suppression campaign. In 19th-century America, being left-handed was still associated with deviance. By the 20th century, that stigma had largely vanished.
