In a crowd of 2,000 Dutch households, 1,680 own a vehicle. But owning a car and driving a car are not the same in the Netherlands. This is a country that chose a different path. 25% of all trips are by bicycle. The car sits in the garage while the Dutch ride.

The Netherlands has 84% vehicle ownership — nearly as high as the United States. Yet 27% of Dutch commuters cycle to work. These numbers aren't contradictory: Dutch households own cars and use them for long trips, groceries, and weekend travel, while cycling for the short daily commute. The bike doesn't replace the car; it occupies a different niche. The infrastructure that makes this possible took 40 years to build.
